Summer HVAC Home Maintenance Tips
Home Maintenance is Key
Summer has finally arrived, so you know what that means. Pool parties, backyard barbecues and kicking back in the AC. But what happens when your air conditioner decides to stop working?
To avoid paying for emergency service calls this summer, there are a few things you can do yourself. Here are five HVAC home maintenance tips to get you and your AC unit through the summer:
Change the Filter
Changing you filter is the easiest and most economical way to prolong the life of your HVAC unit. It’s also overlooked most often. In between cookouts and summer fun, make a point to check your filter 30 to 60 days to make sure it doesn’t need replaced. If you have pets or live in an area with a dust, you might want to check your filter more often.
Swap Out Your Thermostat
In addition to keeping your filters clean, it’s a good idea to swap your current thermostat for a smart one. With a smart thermostat, you can program it to warmer temperatures while you are away and to cool your home down before you arrive. By doing so, you reduce energy consumption and save money.
Seal Your Windows and Doors
Tiny cracks around your windows lets cool air escape, which may cause your AC to run more often. Make sure tiny cracks around your windows and doors are sealed to prevent leakage.
Check the Outside Unit
During the winter, it’s not uncommon for your outdoor unit to accumulate dirt, leaves and even tree branches. Before you switch on your AC, make sure there’s nothing obstructing the fan motor. If possible, remove any debris from the unit by hand and then use a garden hose to rinse it off. If you see anything stuck inside your unit, call an HVAC professional who knows how to quickly dislodge anything that may be stuck inside your unit.
Schedule Regular HVAC Maintenance
If you haven’t already done so, schedule a routine HVAC maintenance. When the mercury soars, your HVAC system works double time to keep your home cool. Without regular maintenance, you may end up with a unit that blows hot air or doesn’t come on at all. Routine maintenance lets you catch small problems before they become expensive repairs or complete replacement.
As always, never try to repair your AC if you don’t have technical experience. Not only does it put you at risk, but you can also cause permanent damage to your unit. For more useful tips to help you beat the heat this summer, contact our HVAC professionals today at 4Front Energy.
