Can Heat Pumps Work as Air Conditioners?
When the outside weather starts to get scorching hot again, it can cause the humidity gauge to go up. When the humidity levels get too high, it can affect how comfortable you are inside of your home. Homeowners have two options to cool their homes: an air conditioning system and a heat pump.
Can a Heat Pump Cool My Home?
Many homeowners are learning about the benefits of investing in a heat pump. They not only heat their homes but also cool them in the summertime. The most common type of heat pump is an air-source heat pump. Inside the internal parts of your heat pump, there will be copper lines. These contain a substance known as refrigerant.
This refrigerant has the natural ability to absorb unwanted heat that is inside of your home. It then transfers it to the air on the outside of your home. It does this by changing the pressure and state of the refrigerant. When the refrigerant is inside of your home, it’s at a low pressure that allows it to absorb heat. When the refrigerant absorbs heat, it actually changes from a liquid state to a gas state.
This refrigerant gas is then pumped outside of your home to your outdoor unit. The refrigerant is at high pressure when it’s in a gaseous state. Once outside, the refrigerant releases its heat then returns back into a liquid form. This refrigerant is then pumped back into your home and goes through the whole cycle again.
Heat Pump vs. Air Conditioner
Many homeowners don’t know that heat pumps work like centralized air conditioning systems. They both have refrigerants that absorb heat inside of your home and send it outside of your home. The main difference between the two is that heat pumps tend to be more energy-efficient.
A Note on Indoor Humidity
Both heat pumps and air conditioners help to combat high humidity levels in your home. As the refrigerant absorbs the heat, excess moisture is also drawn out of the air. This moisture lands on the evaporator coil that houses the refrigerant liquid. By removing moisture from the air, both systems can help to make your home feel much cooler.
